Stamps in the Classroom
Sunday, January 13 — 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
APS Ameristamp Expo — Charlotte Convention Center
Charlotte, North Carolina
Stamps bring another learning tool into the classroom
providing a unique, hands-on learning experience
and offering challenges to students' creativity.
Today's teachers need standards-based lessons that meet the
needs of all their learners using hands-on methods.
Stamps in the Classroom training will accomplish all of those things.
An experienced educator and stamp collector will share:
- an introduction to the fascinating hobby of stamp collecting (philately)
- lesson plans & reproducibles to use in the classroom,
- resources to enhance lessons in every subject
- ongoing training and resources through the All Star Stamp Club
- resources for students beyond the classroom via the Young Stamp Collectors of America
- information on the world's largest stamp club - the American Philatelic Society
- a laptop computer will be helpful, but is not required
Join us for this one-of-a-kind workshop!
Cost: $25. Attendance is limited.
Register today or call Gretchen Moody at 814-933-3810
About the Workshop
The American Philatelic Society, the world's largest stamp club, is sponsoring Stamps in the Classroom, a workshop that will demonstrate how postage stamps may be incorporated into a curriculum. I will lead this 3 ½ hour workshop during the AmeriStamp Expo at the Charlotte Convention Center on Sunday, January 13, 2008.
I have witnessed the positive impact postage stamps have on children. Stamps engage children, immediately capturing their interest. Topics on stamps are diverse and represent history, geography, culture, health, science, sports, literature, music, the visual arts, and more. One stamp can touch on several of these topics prompting children to explore and discover new information and ideas. These are often the same ideas and information listed in most national content standards.
Time during the workshop will be devoted to learning more about stamps, but also learning how to incorporate stamps into a curriculum. Stamps are low-cost, easy to find and store.

Addtional Information
The American Philatelic Society has also developed a stamp album of North Carolina stamps that are available as a free download.
We have a youth area at the show, which is a good destination for field trips. The show itself is an education and is free to the public. We also offer the Boy Scout Merit Badge for stamp collecting. That workshop will be held on Saturday, January 12. Visit our website for details.
