Science and Engineering Class Offered
A fantastic new "Science & Engineering Class" is forming in Claremont, CA designed especially for homeschoolers! The class will be taught by David Holt, an experienced science teacher.
"Science & Engineering" is an exciting hands-on, problem-solving class in which students will explore various science and engineering topics.
The first classes will emphasize practical physics, things with moving parts, with the tactile joy of building things which explore these principles. Mr. Holt has innumerable lesson plans and ideas so that this class will be expected to be exploring other realms of the physical sciences as time goes by. In other words, this is not a canned syllabus which repeats every few sessions; this is a course of classes you could expect your child to enjoy indefinitely.
The cost of materials is included in the class cost of $25 per month for two classes.
An example of what might happen in class: Students are given various materials and tools and a challenge to solve. The materials might be a glue gun, some popsicle sticks and a wooden ramp. The challenge would be to construct something that would make a marble roll down the ramp without stopping for the longest possible time.
Every class offers a different feature a new challenge to be solved. Basic physics concepts will be emphasized including Newton's laws as well as many other standard science concepts.
The class will meet twice monthly on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays at Gameology in Claremont starting on January 9th. This meeting day alternates weeks with our "Homeschool Game Day" which meets at the same location on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays. Now we will have something going on four Tuesdays a month at Gameology!
Plans are in motion to offer two class sessions for "Science & Engineering Class" -- one for kids ages 7-16 who will be in class without parent participation and meeting from 1pm - 2pm. The second proposed session is for kids ages 5-7 with parent participation and meeting at 2pm - 3pm.
We already have met the minimum of 5 students for the age 7-16 group, but the age 5-7 class is not yet confirmed until we reach the minimum of 5 students. The maximum number of students for both classes is 15 students.
This is a great opportunity to get your kids some interesting and fun hands-on science experience in the company of other great homeschoolers!
Some of the best news is the great location where this class will be held! The instructor of this class, David Holt, is the owner of Gameology and he has designed a great environment for learning and socializing. The classroom area at Gameology is immediately adjacent to the retail store; if you are not in the parent-participation class, you can easily hang out in the retail part of the store where there is one large sit-down game table and a couple of other stand-up tables; this gives an opportunity to chat with other parents.
You can also peruse the latest games and perhaps even try out a game from the lending/rental library. The store also has a sun deck with chairs adjacent to the classroom area. This is a pleasant place to be and has been very enjoyable for those of us who have already been attending the "Homeschool Game Day" held on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays each month. Gameology even sells cold drinks and candy, so what more could you ask for?
We already have 7 kids signed up for the age 7-16 group and 3 kids for the age 5-7 class. We anticipate that the both classes will fill up quickly to the maximum of 15 students. We have asked Mr. Holt to start a waiting list for the possible formation of additional classes meeting at a different time or to fill-in for possible cancellations.
Payment of $25 for each month (2 classes each month) is to be made at the first class meeting of each month. Once you have signed up, it is expected that your student(s) will be attending on a continuing basis unless you inform Mr. Holt that your student(s) will not be attending the following month.
Please make this withdrawal notice before the end of the prior month because supplies are purchased based on the number of students enrolled. This also gives the opportunity for new students on a waiting list to take a vacated class spot.
If you are ready to sign up, please contact David Holt directly to secure your place in a class. He can also answer any special questions you may have about how the course will be conducted:
