Modesto Pregnancy Center, a Christian crisis pregnancy center, is sponsoring a conference specifically for home-schooled students of high school age. The speakers are all Christians who volunteer their time as community speakers through the Straight Talk Community Education program of Modesto Pregnancy Center. Straight Talk volunteers spoke to over 10,000 young people last year in our area about the importance of sexual purity before marriage.

Topics to be covered in this conference will include:

Additionally, a session will be given for parents only - "What Adults Need to Know About Teens and Sex." Pediatrician and home schooling mother, Marcella B. Murphy, MD, will speak on this topic from 9:00 - 10:30 a.m., while the students are viewing the fetal development presentation.

Important Note - For the purpose of this conference, the speakers will assume that all students attending have a basic knowledge of human reproduction. Also, during parts of the conference that are more "sensitive," boys and girls will be separated. This includes the presentation on sexually transmitted diseases in which a few medical photographs will be shown. Girls will view only female photographs and boys will view only male photographs. Lastly, abortion procedures will be briefly described, but no graphic photos will be shown.

Space for this conference is limited, so you must register by mail, print and mail your registration form today. Registration must be received by January 25th. There is no charge for the conference, but lunch (pizza, vegetable tray, drink) will be served at 11:45 for a cost of $5.00 per person. Please send check with registration, payable to Modesto Pregnancy Center. Students may bring a bag lunch instead, if desired.

Parents are welcome to stay during any of the presentations, though seating will be given preferentially to the students.

Remember, this conference is geared toward high school age students. Please do not bring younger children to this conference - there is no childcare available.

Please email questions to Marcella Murphy.

Abstinence Until Marriage - Choose Purity Homeschool Conference

Homeschooling mother of four and semi-retired pediatrician Marcella Murphy to present abstinence classes to homeschool community.

The conference will be geared toward a high school level, but parents will be allowed to judge whether their child is ready for very specific information on sexual purity, fetal development, and sexually transmitted diseases. In anticipation of parental concerned about sharing sensitive information in a mixed group setting, we will be separating the girls and boys for some of the presentations which may be uncomfortable for the students in a mixed group. And, yes, abstinence until marriage is definitely the standard we will communicate to the young people.

I have four children whom I have taught at home and am a semi-retired pediatrician. One of the ministries I am involved with is the Community Education program with the Modesto Pregnancy Center. Several of us speak frequently in both public and private schools on the topics of fetal development, sexually transmitted diseases, and the importance of sexual purity for young people. Each year we speak to thousands of students.

I started thinking about the fact that we were not reaching students who are home schooled. I am working on putting together a conference in February specifically for home schooled high schools students. All the speakers are Christians and we would have a workshop for the parents as well. By the way, we don't plan to charge for this conference.
